Sámara, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Area Guide  ·  Guanacaste

Sámara.

A calm, reef-protected bay and a genuine Tico town — Guanacaste’s most overlooked value.

The Character

Calm water, real town, overlooked price.

Sámara is the laid-back, family-friendly side of the Nicoya coast: a gentle crescent bay protected by an offshore reef, which makes it one of the safest, calmest places to swim in Costa Rica.

It has kept a real Tico character — a walkable town, fresh agua de pipa from street vendors, a healthy social scene without the party-town reputation — at prices well below the Gold Coast.

It’s frequently called Guanacaste’s most overlooked beach town, which is precisely where the opportunity sits.

Common Questions

Asked before buying here.

Is Sámara good for families?

It's one of the best family beaches in Costa Rica — a gentle crescent bay protected by an offshore reef, safe swimming, and a walkable, genuinely Tico town with a healthy, low-key social scene.

Is Sámara cheaper than Tamarindo or Nosara?

Generally yes — it's frequently called Guanacaste's most overlooked beach town, with comparable beauty at noticeably lower prices than the Gold Coast or Nosara. That gap is the opportunity.

Can foreigners buy property in Sámara?

Yes. Foreigners hold the same fee-simple ownership rights as Costa Rican citizens on titled land in Sámara. The exception is the first 200 meters from the high-tide line (the Maritime Zone), where most land is concession-based with extra rules — your attorney verifies title before you commit.

How far is Sámara from the airport?

Roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Liberia International (LIR), on the southern Nicoya coast.

Can you live in Sámara year-round?

Yes — it's a real town with groceries, schools, clinics and services, not just a vacation strip, which supports comfortable full-time living.
